Colonel Mabry knew things had gone wrong when they reached the perimeter of the enemy base.  The main gate listed open on its hinges.  The guard house and lookout posts were abandoned.  Pieces of clothing were strewn everywhere.

“What the hell?” Colonel Mabry muttered.  She used her rifle to prod at an olive drab uniform top hanging from the barbwire fence.

“Result of the fever.”  Sergeant Rivera’s voice crackled through the ear piece of Mabry’s comm unit.  She glanced over to see the distinctive red glow of the medical badge affixed to his containment suit.  “Right before the end,” Rivera went on, “the victims so get overheated, they strip everything off.”

“Hello, Elizabeth. Are you ready for your close up?”

Elizabeth blinked open her eyes and looked up into the smiling face of a woman she didn’t recognize.

“Who... who are you?” she struggled to say.

“Never again,” Jim swore as he struggled through the woods.  “Never, ever again!”
