Fri, 25 September 2009 When I graduated from college, my dad, the former all-star college athlete turned grouchy arm-chair quarterback, threw me out of the house as hard and as fast as he could. “You got an education!” he grunted as he kicked me out the front door and through the goal posts of life. “You got five thousand in the bank. Now go out and get a job!” So with bags packed by Mom, I headed out into the real world and did reasonably well for someone with a liberal arts degree. I found a job in advertising at small local newspaper, where I busted my ass for ten years, earning 5-10% commission on every column inch of ad space I sold. I made enough to buy a new car, pay rent on a tiny single bedroom apartment, and take myself out to eat a couple times a month. I wasn’t rich, but I was making ends meet and I was out on my own, out from under Dad’s tyrannical thumb. Life was good. Then the economy tanked and my American dream went straight down the toilet...
